Funded with support from the IBM Global Work/Life Fund, TERC researchers have developed three math-related activity kits for parents and caretakers of IBM employees’ children. Each kit contains materials that help parents and caretakers integrate math into story times, arts and crafts projects, games, and other informal activities.

The kits were designed for three different audiences: daycare centers serving children ages 3-6; after-school and summer programs serving the elementary grades; and family daycares and parents with children of all ages. A follow-up survey of a sample of kit recipients indicated that kit use made a significant impact in several ways: caregivers built confidence in leading informal math activities with children; children better understood math concepts; children and caregivers developed positive attitudes toward math; and children were exposed to substantially more math.
